Saranac
The word Saranac conjures up visions of clear lakes, open skies and breathtaking mountains. To the native people of our land, the Iroquois, the word means “Cluster of Stars.” They lived with the beauty and serenity that was inherent to the lake and surrounding area. We borrow that name in the spirit with which it was created. We brew our Saranac line of beers from the pure water that flows from the Adirondacks and the grains that grow in its unspoiled soil.

Why you shouldn’t be afraid of the dark …
The malt we use to brew this beer is what gives it a really nice, dark color. The cool thing about it, it gives it the color without tasting too roasted or chocolaty, resulting in a beer that’s not real heavy. This is very common for a traditional German black lager, or Schwarzbier.
One of the hops we use in this brew, Mt Hood, is a U.S. grown variety. Although it’s grown in the U.S. due to good growing conditions, it has a lot of German lager characteristics making it perfect for Black Forest.
If you gave someone a blind taste test, they would tell you it was a beer on the lighter side. Because of this unique characteristic, its a great gateway beer to darker styles. So, if people say they don’t like dark beer, have them try it!

Saranac Caramel Porter
ABV: 5.4%
Category: Craft / Specialty
Seasonal Availability: Winter
Why this beer is delectable …
Caramel, caramel, caramel! There is caramel in this beer, make no mistake. We took a traditional style porter and added REAL caramelized sugar for a delicious caramel flavor.
This is a traditional dark English style porter with a sweet caramel flavor, making it a very attractive beer to people who don’t usually like dark beer. The rich color comes from roasted barley, chocolate malt and caramel malt, which also add a nice roasted flavor.
We use East Kent Goldings hops, a very traditional English ale hop, which has roots back to the late 1700s. The other hops, Willamette, is a U.S. grown variety although it has a lot of the same characteristics as an English ale hop.
Saranac Darktoberfest
ABV: 4.7%
Category: Craft / Specialty
Seasonal Availability: Fall
The German style “festbier” is brewed with dark and light munich malts. These malts are Decoction mashed-a unique process that allows us to extract more flavor from our grains. The dark munich malt provides a reddish-copper color and a toasty malt flavor.
Our Dark-tober(fest) takes inspiration from traditional German-style Octoberfest beers. The flavor profile features a more bready malt character with less caramel sweetness as compared to an American-style Octoberfest. This beer is a bit bigger, maltier, and darker than the American-style, and favors the traditional Munich malt character. Straight delicious.
Saranac Disruption Nitro
ABV: 7.0%
Category: Craft / Specialty
Seasonal Availability: One Offs
Disruption is a nitro infused Brown Ale, brewed with a distinctive mix of caramel and chocolate malts. Northern Brewer and Eastern Kent Goldings hops balance the deep maltiness, imparting their own rich earthy-fruitiness.
Disruption was once a wild, ravenous black bear but you mustn’t fret. Our brewers have tamed this mighty beast: the nitro not only gives this bear a smooth mouthfeel with a creamy finish, but it also accentuates the sweet malty character of the grains for greater depth in cocoa, caramel and coffee flavor. Pour disruption down the center of the glass and marvel at its cascading beauty. Get ready to experience the dark side of this disruptive brown ale.
Saranac Gen IV
ABV: 4.5%
Category: Craft / Specialty
Seasonal Availability: Summer
Gen IV is a hop-forward Session IPA which embodies four generations of Matt Family brewing – Nick and Fred helped pilot brew the winning recipe so it must run in their blood. We’ve used Amarillo and Citra hops to deliver big tropical and citrus aroma and flavor, and wheat malt for a sturdy backbone to hold onto more hop character without driving up the ABV.
How did we do it? Well, we wanted to pack an uncanny amount of hops into this beer so we used White IPA which beer experts consider one of the best in craft. And we wanted to pack an uncanny amount of hops into this beer so we used our Gas Chromatograph to measure essential oil concentrations of hops so we precisely selected Amarillo and Citra to deliver the best aroma and flavor. We’ve taken our learnings and brewed a flavorful and easy drinking delight. Enjoy!

When our founder began brewing back in 1888 a few things were different, like the significantly lighter grains he used in his first IPA (we agree – he sure was ahead of his time brewing IPAs back then).
The lighter grains resulted in a noticeably lighter color in the beer, which allows the hop flavor to shine through. We’ve re-crafted his original creation, staying true to his technique, but we’ve modernized the recipe with the most innovative hops available today.
We’re proud to share over 125 years of brewing expertise with you: our Legacy IPA.
